As a leader, you’ll be facing the most difficult task and that is to make decisions for your team. Leadership and decision-making are two inseparable concepts so it’s logical to think that in order to be a good leader, you need to be decisive as well. Having the ability to make calculated decisions, weigh the consequences and face the outcome of your actions and encourage others to be wise decision-makers makes an excellent leader. Here are 3 of the most excellent tips in making better decisions:

  1. Don’t live with fear.

Fear is the number one enemy of success. Although fear is normal, it’s not beneficial for you and the people who depend on you. Remember that there is a consequence for every action. You need to calculate the risks and identify whether the outcome outweighs the possible consequences. By understanding the pros and cons of your actions, you will have a clear picture on where to focus more and make good decisions. You also need to recognize smart failure. If you failed, ask yourself, “Did I learn something?” or “Did it lead to a solution?”. What matters is you took the risk. If you have not done that, then you wouldn’t know what could have been. This experience will teach you to take a new approach in decision making and be more careful with your actions.

  1. Don’t seek for perfection.

A lot of people fail because they seek for perfection in everything. You have to understand that imperfection is part of life and there are certain things that you can’t control no matter how hard you try. It is always better to get the job 90% done and on time than have it completed by 5 or 10 minutes late. If you wait for everything to be perfect before you take any action, higher chance is you’ll miss out on big opportunities and regret that you didn’t take risk when you can. Instead of going for the unattainable, go for what is readily available at the moment, have a leap of faith and believe that you’d be able to make something big out of it.

  1. Assess if it’s right or wrong.

Assessing whether something is right or wrong can be extremely challenging.  It’s hard to be objective about it. You have to expect that some people won’t approve. It actually depends on who you ask. But as a leader, you need to be able to make decisions even if it means offending the people around you. You may face some controversies but it should not dissuade you from doing what is right. You have to accept that sometimes you need to compromise in order to get significant results. But bear in mind that you need to keep your character and integrity no matter what you decide.
