5 Toxic Emotions That Can Possibly Lead To Overeating

hunger-413685_960_720

Human beings respond to their instincts on variety of situations. When we a re hungry, we tend to become irritable unless we stuff our tummy with food. This is probably the reason why a lot of people struggle in losing weight. Hunger is a physical manifestation that the body needs energy. It can help you stay in shape if you stop your cravings and eat the right amount of food. The key here is to eat only when you are hungry, not because you are bored or feeling frustrated. Here are 5 toxic emotions that can possibly lead to overeating.

  1. Depression

When a person is feeling anxious or depressed, he tends to eat more to soothe his anxiety and depression. Overeating can be considered a panic attack because you’ll get tricked into thinking that the only way to relieve stress is to turn into food. Overeating is comparable to a boiling water in a kettle. As the water in the kettle reaches its boiling point, the whistle blows indicating that the vapor is released in air, lowering the pressure. Same goes for a depressed person who turns into overeating to soothe stress, thinking that food will provide instant comfort.

  1. Frustration

There are so many things going on with our lives that make us want to quit. It could be a low-paying job, a stressful relationship, or a boring life. These are some of the reasons why people feel frustrated. Sometimes we don’t know what to do and we turn into eating to compensate for the uneasiness we are feeling. Instead of turning into food, analyze the situation and identify the root cause for each frustration. In this way, you can figure out how to deal with the real problem before it gets out of control.

  1. Feeling unloved

Sometimes we feel so alone and that no one truly cares for us. We use eating as a way to comfort us and meet our needs. When we get to a point that we want to feel a sense of belongingness and have someone to make us feel loved, we try to fight it and tell ourselves that we don’t need to rely on anyone for our happiness. Hence, we rely on food to ignore our disappointments.

  1. Self-pity

When things don’t happen the way we expect them to, we feel that we won’t get what we want because the whole world is against us. We pity ourselves not realizing that we are still blessed for having family and friends who love us. We only see the negative side of the situation. In order to cope, we isolate ourselves and turn to food for comfort. We prefer to hide and use badness as our sanctuary and we do this by overeating.

  1. Fear

Fear is usually combatted by a particular food that we really love; but once we’re done, fear starts to creep us out. This is the reason why we overeat when we are feeling scared. The best way to overcome fear is to not see it as something negative, but something that will make you grow stronger as a person.
