“Walking is the best possible exercise. Habituate yourself to walk very far.”

How To Reach 10,000 Steps Even Though You Hate Walking

Walking is one of the healthiest activities and this is certainly not something new for you. However, do you know how much walking is enough? According to many experts walking around 10,000 steps or about 8 kilometers or 5 miles per day should be enough. Every step we take, even those that we do at our home count. This might sound like an easy task, but the truth is that most modern people practice sedentary lifestyle and when they are on their feet they tend to use cars, public transportation, elevators and other means instead of walking. In addition, people today don’t have sufficient free time and this is the reason why this number looks very high to most of us. Luckily, there are certain things that you can do in order to reach 10,000 steps per day even though you hate walking or you simply don’t have enough time.

Walk with your kids to their school

If you are a parent and your children are still small, you can walk them to their school. Don’t wait for the school bus or don’t use your car. Enjoy the good weather and walk to their school. This is a good way to take a significant amount of steps for the day.

Park your car further from the destination

It is good to mention that you don’t have to completely eliminate the use of your car if you want to reach those 10,000 steps. Just leave your car on a parking lot that is located about 10 minutes walk from your office or the destination where you are headed. The same goes for those who use public transport. They can walk out a couple of stations before or after their regular station.

Don’t use the elevator

Some people have forgotten that every building has stairs. So, try to use the stairs instead of the elevator. Don’t let the height change your mind. If the place where you are going is very high, use the elevator to a certain floor and get out.

Check your colleagues

People today usually use e-mails or SMS if they want to talk to their colleagues even if the colleagues are one office away, it is a good idea to stand up and walk to their office from time to time. This will increase the number of steps you make on a daily basis.

Spend more time in stores

If you are in a mall or a big store, don’t walk right to the place where you want to buy something. Take some time to walk around or use a longer path to get there. This is a great way to relax and exercise.

Use a pedometer

Finally, remember that we are talking about 10,000 steps. This is a huge number and we don’t believe that anyone can actually count so many steps each day without making mistakes. You can use a notebook, but the simplest and most convenient option is to use a pedometer. This is a specially designed device that can be placed on your wrist, arm or ankle that has the ability to measure the steps you’ve made.
