5 Tips To Overcome Severe Social Phobia
Social anxiety disorder, commonly known as social phobia is a disorder that involves a tremendous fear of social situations and evaluation from the people around. It is normal for people to feel anxious or self-conscious on events that might require other people to assess you like delivering a speech or going on a panel interview for the job that you want. Social phobia is not normal in a sense that interaction with people is avoided due to fear of criticism and embarrassment. Social situations can be a bit frightening and no matter how introvert you are, you need to learn to cope and be at ease when interacting with people. Social phobia is unhealthy and can cause emotional distress. Here are some tips to overcome social anxiety disorder.
- Get rid of negative thoughts.
Do not obsess over being embarrassed or criticized by people on social events. People can judge but you have full control on how you respond to it. It’s good to be self-conscious but doing it in excess is totally unhealthy. If you keep on avoiding social situations, it limits your potential and eventually destroys your life. Remember that other people’s opinions don’t matter. What truly matters is your opinion of yourself. Analyze your thoughts and challenge yourself to overcome them.
- Do breathing exercises.
Learn to control your breath as it can help you relax when you’re feeling nervous or anxious. When you are anxious, you breathe heavily causing the balance between oxygen intake and carbon dioxide release to shift. It only makes you suffer more from anxiety leading to physical symptoms such as abnormal heart rate, suffocation, and muscle spasm. You can do breathing exercise on uncomfortable situations. Sit comfortably and relax your back and shoulders. Take slow, deep breaths. This will help you stay calm even when you are in the most awkward social situation.
- Conquer your fear.
One of the best things you can do to overcome social phobia is to deal with your fear of social situations and to not try to get rid of the things that will trigger them from happening. Avoiding the problem does not resolve the problem; instead it worsens it. Your fear of criticism will not help you to grow and can affect you long-term. Instead of expressing your ideas at work, you choose not to out of fear that other people will judge you or say something bad about you. This fear can be a huge encumbrance in attaining your career goals.
- Establish relationships.
If you can’t conquer social anxiety alone, it is really helpful to establish relationships with different people. You can start by making few new friends. Having friends who share different opinion will develop your sense of comfort and will make you less conscious of yourself, therefore building more meaningful relationships.
- Change your lifestyle.
Lifestyle changes can help in overcoming social anxiety disorder. Limit your caffeine intake because caffeinated beverages such as soda and coffee can stimulate symptoms of anxiety. Avoid smoking and drink moderately. Have sufficient sleep because lack of sleep can make a person anxious of social situations. Act now and stop social phobia from sabotaging your dreams!
