I'm always asked, ‘What's the secret to success?' But there are no secrets. Be humble. Be hungry. And always be the hardest worker in the room. -Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is perhaps one of the most well-known wrestlers out there. He has won the WWF Tag Team championship (five times) and the WWF Heavyweight award (six times). Back when he was young, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson injured himself and was unable to play football, even though he had been preparing for that career for quite a long time. How, he didn't let his injury deter him from having a successful profession, and instead began a career in wrestling. Eventually, he branched into acting, furthering his CV in an entirely new field. That kind of adaptability is truly an excellent quality; it has allowed him to work harder than ever before, and gain a wide range of skills.
Johnson was born in May 1972 in California. However, he didn't start out in his wrestling career right away. Instead, he started by playing football at school, when he attended the University of Miami. It was while he was here that he developed a bad back injury—for which he lost his prospects of playing in the NFL.
Thus, Johnson instead embarked on a successful career as a wrestler. He first started in the WWF. After he had some victories under his belt, the WWF signed him on permanently, under the stage name Flex Kavana. He became part of The Nation of Domination, a stable for professional wrestling, and eventually started managing it. He also changed his pseudonym “The Rock.” As time went on he joined another group, the Corporation, and was with them when he started his infamous struggles with Stone Cold Steve Austin.
In 1997, he married his high-school girlfriend, Dany Garcia. Although they later divorced, their union bore Simone Alexandra, who today is fifteen.
To this day, Johnson still wrestles on occasion. However, he is an actor now as well. He first started in The Mummy Returns in 2001, in which he played the Scorpion King. The next year, he played in The Scorpion King. In 2005, he was in Be Cool. In 2010, he had a starring role in The Tooth Fairy. His star continued to grow as the years went on; in 2014, he performed as Hercules. In 2015, he acted in Furious Seven and San Andreas, and he also played Spencer Strasmore in Ballers.
So, what can we learn from The Rock’s story? Certainly there's the importance of never giving up; he wouldn't have gotten so far into his career if he hadn't put so much time into it. After all, he won eleven major championships. But—perhaps even more importantly—Johnson’s story tells us how important it is to be adaptable. With his back injury, he couldn't play in the NFL—so he channeled his energy into becoming one of the country’s best wrestlers. He didn't let his injury deter him; instead, he adapted to it, and changed his life plan accordingly. He could have just gone into another field entirely, but he still pursued an athletic career.
He didn't let his prior failures bring him down; he simply picked himself up, dusted himself off, and put efforts into his job—and then, when he decided it was time for a change of pace, he applied all those hard working skills into the new career of actor. That kind of adaptability is something we can truly all admire.
Affirmation for today:
I must always remember that I am flexible, even when I don't feel that way.
