With A Few Days to Live, the Real Life ‘Benjamin Button’ Inspired Millions around the World

Sam BernsThe curious case of Benjamin Burton was a short story that was created by famous writer F. Scott Fitzerald. In 2008, a film version of the short story was released, which saw it receive numerous accolades. However, the film also made it possible for people to learn more about the illness that causes reverse aging.

The Benjamin Burton Disease, which is also scientifically called its name Progeria, is a deadly genetic condition that causes accelerated aging in all its sufferers. The condition, also referred to as the Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome is extremely rare and has no cure. However, a 17-year-old defied all odds to become one of the most inspirational people on the planet despite having suffered from the disease all his life.

Sam Berns was diagnosed with Progeria at the tender age of two, and even though doctors gave him a life expectancy of 13 years, Sam outlived this diagnosis until his passing at the age of 17. Sam was a Junior student at Foxboro High School in Massachusetts, where he led an average life. Not only was he an honor student, but he was also a percussionist in the school’s marching band, as well as an Eagle Scout. He was also a massive sports fan and made every effort possible to attend important school sporting functions.

Sam Bern2Even with the disease bound to affect his life forever, Sam did not let it define him. He made it his mission to affect positive change in people’s lives, as was evident through his TEDX talk, which changed the lives of millions of individuals around the world.

In his talk, Sam captivated audiences with his wit and personality and his relentless desire to live a purpose fulfilled life. In his TEDx presentation, which was titled My Philosophy for a Happy Life, he talked about some of the struggles he had endured as a result of the disease, and he also discussed the strategies he used to overcome some of his obstacles. Below is a summary of Sam’s philosophy for a happy life:

  • Everyone should be okay with the things that they cannot do because ultimately if you search vigilantly, you will recognize that there is a lot more that you can do in comparison to what you can’t.
  • People should surround themselves with individuals that want to be around.
  • You should always fight to keep moving forward.
  • No one should ever miss a party if they can help it.
