“All discomfort comes from suppressing your true identity.”

3 Ways To Deal With Identity Crisis

We acquire different identities as we grow older. These identities are acquired either from our cultural backgrounds or past experiences which could both be positive and negative. You may have a positive identity of being optimistic but you have a negative identity of being bad-tempered. Identity crisis is a condition that makes a person feel that he is losing something that used to define him; which often causes him to mislay his self-worth. When a person suffers from identity crisis, he feels that he loses his fundamental goal in life – and that is to maintain his self-worth. Identity crisis directly affects your self-confidence that’s why having a solid foundation of your identity is important so you will have the power to overcome every obstacle that you will encounter in your life. If you want to have a solid identity, you must not identify yourself with things that are temporary. Once you identify your self-worth to something that is not about to last, then automatically you’ll be too delicate and get easily affected when things are taken away from you. We all experience identity crisis once in our lives, but how should we deal with it?

  1. Be confident.

You have to feel secure about yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself, then nobody else will. You choose your own identity. If you think that you are a loser, then you will definitely be a loser. You can change your negative identity anytime you wish. All it takes is a change in mindset. It may be too challenging to develop a new identity, but it is possible. Changing identities is a part of life. It naturally progresses with time. Identity crisis arises when we are forced to change and we are not given a choice or we don’t have the power to control the situation. In this case, accept it and embrace the opportunity to learn about yourself more and improve the quality of your life. Believe in yourself and be confident that you are capable of making the right choices and these choices will lead you to the right path of being a better you. Give yourself affirmation during the transition phase and never forget to compliment yourself.

  1. Be conscious to which you identify yourself to.

Identifying yourself to temporary things can be the worst thing you can do to yourself. For example, you identified yourself as Jesse’s girlfriend. What will happen when you guys broke up? Are you going to lose your self-worth? You must figure out who you are on a long term perspective, the things you want to achieve and the particular type of personality that you wish to have. Focus on what you are good at, hone it further because these are permanent things you can relate yourself with.

  1. Do not be influenced by outside forces.

You are the only person who is responsible for your identity. People will give input but it is still up to you how you are going to mold your identity. Your family members will be your number one critics but it should not dissuade you in transforming yourself the way you want. They will always love you regardless of who you are so there’s nothing to worry about.
